Hongcun

Hongcun is a famous place for longevity in Wuyuan. The oldest person in history lived to 119 years old! Even now, there are many long-lived people in their nineties in the village. The Millennium ginkgo tree at the entrance of the village is said to be planted by Hongji, the ancestor of Hongcun. But the most amazing thing is the ancient camphor next to it. Its trunk is thicker than the ginkgo tree. Although the trunk was rotten in the early years due to lightning strike, and now it has only one lateral branch, it stands tall and upright in the wind and rain of the old calendar, proud of frost and snow.

Hongcun

Hongcun, named Changshou Guli in Qing Dynasty. 12 kilometers away from Qinghua Town, Wuyuan County, it is one of the scenic spots of Wuyuan north line. According to the records of the village genealogy, Hong Village was built in the early Northern Song Dynasty. It is a village inhabited by the Hong family. It is located in a narrow and winding valley, surrounded by mountains and gurgling streams, with beautiful scenery. Simple folk customs, is a place to let your mind rest, suitable for a daze.

Origin of villages

According to the records in the village genealogy, Hongcun was built in the early Northern Song Dynasty. It is said that the first person who moved here was Hongji. There is also a story about the construction of the village.

When Hongji first arrived here, he saw narrow paddy fields, winding valleys, surrounded by mountains, gurgling streams, beautiful scenery, and deep in his heart he loved it. I saw a man say to him, I give you two seeds, if you can plant them alive, you can settle down here. So Hongji immediately planted them, and the next year he came back here. A camphor tree and a gingko tree were already flourishing and thriving, so Hongji built a village here in the early Northern Song Dynasty.

Walking in the quiet village, which has been polished by thousands of years of trampling, we can see that the Hui style architecture with white walls and dark tiles is very eye-catching. High fire wall, after thousands of years of wind and rain erosion, already mottled wall hard to cover the past glory. A stream called health river passes by the village.

Walking through the clan buildings such as Guangyu hall and Sanshu hall, you can see the amazing three Hongcun Carvings: stone carvings, brick carvings and wood carvings. Whether it is easy to carve thick logs, or hard stones and bricks, the carved or fired figures, flowers, birds, insects and fish, birds and animals, and life scenes are vivid, lifelike and clear as yesterday. Or inlaid in the external walls and eaves of clan buildings to show the rich luxury of the clan. Or decorated in the house beams, doors and windows. Its exquisite workmanship, exquisite techniques and well preserved all highlight the architectural wisdom of the working people.

Looking around, the pavilions in the house are all made of logs. Carved beams and painted buildings, with complex and luxurious carving, close and meticulous structure, give off bursts of original wood fragrance. The large or small patio is the source of light in the house, and the corridor connecting the upper and lower halls. It is also the best embodiment of the architectural style of the ancient quadrangle in Hongcun.

In ancient times, the village was rich in "Usnea tea". The villagers had a good way of health preservation, and there were many people who lived a long life, so it was called "longevity ancient". It's amazing that in such a remote mountain village, there is a family of "four generations of doctors", which shows that Wuyuan Shuxiang's "village of ten households, do not abandon recitation" really deserves its reputation.

There is a ginkgo tree at the entrance of the village, which has been planted for more than 1000 years by Hongji, the ancestor of Hongcun. The ancient ginkgo tree is more than 30 meters high with a chest circumference of 5.20 meters. It has luxuriant branches and leaves and can produce more than 800 Jin of Ginkgo every year. Ginkgo biloba leaves can release a small amount of hydrogen cyanide, which is a highly toxic chemical, and this very small amount of hydrogen cyanide has anti-cancer effect. Hongcun can become a "longevity Guli", probably related to this. There is also an ancient camphor tree next to the ginkgo tree, which is thicker than the ginkgo tree. Although it was struck by lightning in the early years, its trunk has rotted away, and now it has only one lateral branch, it still stands tall in the wind and rain, proud of frost and snow, gloomy and full of vitality.
