Malan base was built by Chinese soldiers on a Gobi desert at the west end of Lop Nor in the 1950s. In October 1964, with a loud noise over Lop Nor, China's first atomic bomb was successfully tested, and Malan base became known to outsiders. The entire Malan nuclear weapon test site covers an area of nearly 100000 square kilometers, equivalent to the area of Jiangsu Province. It is the only nuclear test base in China, mainly responsible for the organization and command, theoretical research, test analysis, engineering technology and service support of China's nuclear test (Experiment).

Name source

Statement 1: in the late 1950s, an army came here and saw that although the place was deserted, it had beautiful Malan flowers, so it was named Malan.

Statement 2: after returning from North Korea, general Zhang Aiping served as deputy chief of general staff of the people's Liberation Army, and he presided over the nuclear test. This famous general poet gave it a poetic place name - Malan, hence its name.

On October 16, 1964, at Malan nuclear test base in Lop Nur, Xinjiang, China's first atomic bomb exploded successfully. Since then, China has become a nuclear power.

Living area

The living area of Malan base is about 7 square kilometers. Today Malan base is like a micro city with all kinds of living facilities. It's hard to believe that it would be Xinjiang if we didn't look to the distance to see Tianshan Mountain. A straight and wide asphalt road runs across the base. On both sides of the road, there are towering poplars. Each tree is tall and straight. On both sides of the road, there are many people who have made contributions to China's nuclear weapons.

In 2011, it was listed in the second batch of classic list of national red tourism projects by the national development and Reform Commission.

In October 2012, the "malanjun Expo Park" with an investment of more than 6 million yuan started to lay the foundation. In cooperation with the planning and Design Institute of Tsinghua University, Heshuo county Party committee and government of Bayinguoleng Mongolian Autonomous Prefecture have completed the overall planning, detailed planning and landscape design of the red tourism of the military Expo Park.

Malan has left many marks on the work and life of national defense generals and nuclear test scientists, and many important residences and work venues still maintain the original style. The 300 meter long man-made air defense tunnel (the third line headquarters) reveals the mystery and hardship of nuclear test.
