Suya Lake

Suya Lake is the largest plain artificial reservoir in Asia. It is located 2 km east of Luodian Town, Runan County, Zhumadian City, Henan Province. It starts from Yuhuang temple in the north, reaches yezhugang in the south, Guizhuang in the East and Bieqiao in the West.

The reservoir was first built in 1958. The South-North earth dam on the East Bank of the reservoir is 35.29 km long, 58 m high, the wave wall is 0.5 m long, and the dam crest is 4-7 m wide. It blocks the upstream water from Banqiao reservoir and Boshan reservoir. The water storage area is 239 square kilometers, and the annual water surface is 110000 mu. It produces more than 30 kinds of fish, of which carp, crucian carp and silver carp are the most.

It is the largest plain reservoir with the longest dam in China. It is a large-scale water conservancy project mainly for flood control, combined with irrigation, power generation, breeding, tourism and other comprehensive utilization projects. It has the reputation of "artificial cave".

Main attractions

Suya Lake was rebuilt in 1989. It has a wide water surface and pleasant scenery. It is called "man-made Dongting" in the north. On the east bank, the willow waves are rolling; from a distance, the water and sky are the same color, and the clouds are flourishing; from a close view, the blue waves are rippling, and the gulls and egrets are flying together. Suya Lake and its wetland reconstructed in 1989 are very lively: more than 3000 egrets are flying, and hundreds of swans and swans are playing. According to statistics, tens of thousands of birds nest in Runan every year. More than 130 kinds of migratory and resident birds have been found in the county, including Red Crowned Crane, white stork and red stork, which are the first-class national protected animals, and 11 kinds of birds listed in the Convention on international trade in endangered wild animals and plant species.

Historical legend

It's said that long ago, there was no lake here, but a place where rivers crisscrossed, there were floods for ten years, and wild animals often haunted. A few years later, the emperor of the Yuan Dynasty sealed up his son in Runan. The king was cruel and good at riding and shooting. One spring, the king led his guard to go out of the city to inspect on behalf of the emperor. He found that there were birds in the sky and animals on the ground. He was overjoyed. Then he drew a bow and took an arrow and shot a fox. Unexpectedly, the fox did not die, but ran away with an arrow. The LORD was in hot pursuit behind him, but he was blocked by the village. The king was so angry that he ordered the "horse racing enclosure" and decided to use the land as a hunting ground for the imperial use. A sign engraved with "hunting ground for the imperial use, forbidden area" was inserted on the land within a radius of 40 to 50 Li. All villages in the field were demolished, and the people moved out within a time limit. The violator's family was killed! From then on, until the end of the Ming Dynasty, it was the "royal hunting ground" of Runan. People call it "officialdom slope" discontentedly. Long term River disrepair, flooding, every summer, a vast ocean. Flocks of wild ducks and waterfowls came here to settle down and breed. Guanchangpo became the world of wild ducks and waterfowls. So it is also called "Suya Lake". At the end of the Ming Dynasty, Li Zicheng, the king of Chuang, led his troops to fight a bloody battle in Runan city and captured the king alive. The "yanwang Temple" was burned, which was known as the "battle of runing mansion" in history. Only then did the land return to the people's hands.

Historical evolution

Suya Lake is located in the northwest of Runan County, and the nearest lake dike is 5km away from the county. In the early days, there was no lake. It was low-lying, sparsely populated, and crisscrossed with rivers. Ruhe River, Lianjiang River, Huangxi River, Yunxi River, Hanxi River, Qingshui River, LiuYe River and Guanchang River pass through the area. The flood is slow, often burst and overflowed, the slope water accumulates, the crops are submerged, the traffic is interrupted, the flood is disastrous, a vast ocean, the local residents escape from famine and beg for food, their wives and children are separated, which makes the village sparse and become the habitat of wild grass and ducks There are a lot of water birds, birds and animals in it, people can't live in it. Therefore, it was called "Suya Lake" in history. "Old annals of Runan" describes the scene of a flood in history: from the western style building in the south to Yanqiao in the north, thirty or forty miles in length and thirty or forty miles in length. In case of drought, hopping locust, take off migration, spread throughout the county. In history, hongxipi was built by Emperor Wu of Han Dynasty, which was beneficial for a time. Because of the serious siltation, the project was abandoned when it was bigger than that of emperor Cheng of Han Dynasty, and the people were left in misery. In June 1957, the people's government, with the approval of the Ministry of water resources, built suyahu reservoir for the purpose of promoting benefits and eliminating harms. The people living in the lake area will be moved out of the lake area and properly resettled. In the spring of 1958, we organized 110000 migrant workers in five counties of Runan, Shangcai, Pingyu, Zhengyang and Xiping. After four months of hard struggle, we dug the bottom of the lake, built dams, dredged rivers, dug irrigation canals and built sluices. We built a large plain reservoir and supporting projects that can not only store flood but also irrigate. Suya Lake dike is 35.29 km long from yezhugang in the south to Yuhuangmiao in the north, and nearly 15 km wide from the east to the West. It encloses the original Suya Lake, guanpochang, gaoshengpo, Siping lake, liulijingpo and yantingpo. Suya Lake, the largest artificial plain lake in China, has been built, with an area of 167 square kilometers and a control area of 4498 square kilometers. After that, it has been reinforced and improved three times, and now it has become the main water resource for aquaculture and agricultural irrigation. There is an island in the middle of the lake, which used to be a military aircraft training range in the past. The reed marshes in the island are lush and full of wild birds.
