Shanxi Shaanxi Grand Canyon of the Yellow River

Although there are some famous valleys such as Longyang Gorge, Jishi Gorge, Liujia gorge, Hongshan gorge, Qingtong gorge, Sanmen Gorge and so on, they are separated by a series of wide valley basins.

Only from Hekou town in Inner Mongolia to Yumenkou in Shanxi Province, the longest continuous canyon on the main stream of the Yellow River, Shanxi Shaanxi Grand Canyon, is formed. It is 725 km long, with 27 counties and cities along the line, covering an area of 111600 square kilometers.

In Hetao area, the Yellow River, which is trending from east to west, has a sharp turn from north to south. It moves southward from the Ordos Plateau, with Luliang on the left and Northern Shaanxi on the right. It is deep in the Loess Plateau. The valley depth is more than 100 meters, and the valley bottom elevation gradually drops from 1000 meters to less than 400 meters. The narrowest part of the riverbed, such as hukou, is only 30 to 50 meters.

Canyon features

Because of the loess gully, mud and sand, the amount of sand coming from Shanxi Shaanxi Grand Canyon reaches accounts for 56% of the whole Yellow River, although its drainage area is only 15% of the Yellow River.

It can be said that the real "yellow" river is achieved here, with deep streams flowing and turbid waves emptying. The typical features of the Yellow River gorge are gathered here, among which the Longmen gorge above Yumenkou is the most spectacular.

Li Bai said that "the Yellow River will come to Kunlun in the west, roaring thousands of miles to touch the dragon's gate", which just points out that the Grand Canyon of Shanxi and Shaanxi reached its final climax here.
