aberdeen

Aberdeen is the central part of the Southern District of Hong Kong. Aberdeen was originally known as Shek Pai Wan (now commonly referred to as Shek Pai Wan estate in the middle of Aberdeen). After the British army landed in Aberdeen, the whole island was called Hong Kong, and this place was called Aberdeen.

name

Aberdeen was originally known as Shek Pai Wan (now commonly referred to as Shek Pai Wan estate in the mid levels of Aberdeen). In 1841, a group of British troops landed in Aberdeen and asked the local residents where they were. The local residents answered Hong Kong, so the whole island is called Hong Kong Island and this place is called Aberdeen. Later, the British Hong Kong government named the place Aberdeen (Aberdeen, Aberdeen's English name) in memory of Lord Aberdeen, the British Foreign Secretary at that time. During the Japanese occupation of Hong Kong, Aberdeen was renamed Yuan Hong Kong, which means "the origin of Hong Kong".

history

Fishermen lived in Aberdeen long before the opening of Hong Kong. After the opening of the port, in addition to fisheries, industries began to develop in Aberdeen. Xiapu dock, built in 1857, is the first large dock in Hong Kong. Later, it was acquired by Huangpu dock in 1860's and developed into Aberdeen dry dock. Later, it became one of the four largest docks in Hong Kong. At the beginning of the 20th century, Dacheng paper mill was set up in the east of Aberdeen. However, in the 1920s, due to the expansion of the Aberdeen reservoir, the water source could no longer be used and the business needed to end. The original site was later developed into Aberdeen children's Institute of Technology (now Aberdeen technical school).

With the development of the times, many fishermen in Aberdeen have moved to live on land since the 1960s. The original site of the dry land factory in Aberdeen was reclaimed in the 1970s to become the Aberdeen centre, a large private housing estate in today's Southern District.
