Sanya Coral Reef National Nature Reserve

Sanya Coral Reef Nature Reserve belongs to the coastal area of Sanya City, mainly in Luhuitou and Dadonghai sea areas, including Yalong Bay, boar island sea area, and East and West hawksbill island sea area of Sanya Bay, with a total area of 40 square kilometers. The protected objects are coral reefs and their ecosystems.

Sanya Coral Reef National Nature Reserve is one of the national marine nature reserves approved by the State Council in September 1990. It is located in the coastal area in the south of Sanya City, Hainan Province and the sea area around the island. Its geographical location is within the range of 109 ° 20 ′ 50 ″ ~ 109 ° 40 ′ 30 ″ E and 18 ° 10 ′ 30 ″ ~ 18 ° 15 ′ 30 ″ n.

The main protected objects are: reef building corals, non reef building corals, coral reefs and their ecosystems and biodiversity. Corals are built by corals, which are tropical marine coelenterates.

Setting up background

In the 1970s and 1980s, coral reefs were seriously damaged. People dug coral reefs to make crafts, and even burned coral reefs to make lime. As a result, the Coral Reef Resources in this area were greatly reduced, the good ecological environment was destroyed, and the biodiversity was damaged.

In 1989, scientists proposed that the coral reef area should be designated as a national marine nature reserve.

In September 1990, Sanya Coral Reef National Nature Reserve was approved by the State Council as one of the national marine nature reserves.

Sanya Coral Reef National Nature Reserve is located in the coastal area in the south of Sanya City, Hainan Province and the sea area around the island. Its geographical location is within the range of 109 ° 20 ′ 50 ″ ~ 109 ° 40 ′ 30 ″ E and 18 ° 10 ′ 30 ″ ~ 18 ° 15 ′ 30 ″ n. It borders on Luhuitou Peninsula and the coastal waters of the big and small East China Sea (including Xiaozhou Island), and the legendary and beautiful waters around Dongmao island and XiMao island in the West. From east to west, the nature reserve is composed of Yalongwan area, Luhuitou Peninsula yulinjiao area and East and West maodao area, with a total area of 85 square kilometers.

There are obvious differences between the central part and the eastern and western parts of the area. The eastern and western parts are typical island landforms; the central part has many headlands and bays, belonging to peninsula land landforms.

Protected objects

The main protected objects of the reserve are reef forming corals, non reef forming corals, coral reefs and their ecosystems and biodiversity. Corals are built by corals, which are tropical marine coelenterates. 117 species (including 5 subspecies) belong to 13 families, 33 genera and 2 subgenera. In addition, there are Cang coral, Sheng coral, Porphyra, various non reef building corals soft coral, gorgonian and other rich and diverse marine organisms that live together with and depend on coral reef ecosystem.

Management organization

The competent departments of the reserve are the State Oceanic Administration and the Department of ocean and Fisheries of Hainan Province, and the Sanya national Coral Reef Nature Reserve Management Office is responsible for the protection, construction and management of the reserve. The management office has three coral reef protection stations, a coral Specimen Exhibition Hall for public ecological education, and a number of law enforcement, education and scientific research facilities and equipment.
