Gastein battery

Casillan fort is an ancient fort located in the lobby area of Macao. During the Portuguese colonial period, it was one of the military defense strongholds. In the past, the gasilan fort was the first line of defense along the coast. It was connected with the ma'ge fort, count Ren fort, St. John's castle and Sanba fort to defend the coastal areas southeast of Macao.

The garrison is located on the side of Songshan to the east of Nanwan, opposite the new wing of Lisboa Hotel. In the early years, Portuguese built fortifications and forts there.

Historical evolution

In 1584, Spanish missionaries built the monastery of Saint Francis at the site behind the fortress of Gastein.

In 1662, the fort was expanded to today's scale.

After the Portuguese soldiers withdrew from Macao in the 1970s, it became the Ministry of security, which was in charge of the marine police, the public security police and the fire brigade.

Structural layout

The garrison is located on the side of Pine Hill to the east of South Bay, opposite the new wing of today's Lisboa Hotel. Early Portuguese built fortifications and fort there. The stone wall on the fort is 2 Zhang high and 20 Zhang wide, with 10 cannons on it. The stone wall is made of huge stone, strong and straight; it has been repaired many times for hundreds of years and has been preserved to this day. The building of the fort is a barracks. After the reformation of Roman Church, the monasteries were abandoned for several years. Later, the monastery was transformed into a barracks.

Architectural features

The fort is located in the southeast corner of the old South Bay coast. It was built in the 1620s and was once attached to the convent of St. Francis. The fort was originally equipped with six cannons with the longest firing range up to taitsai Island, which is an important coastal defense area in the southeast of Macao.

The stone wall of the fort is more than 6 meters high, and the platform is oval. It is divided into upper and lower layers. The original tunnel leads to the lower layer of the fort, which has been filled by the reclamation project. The two-story building behind the fort was later converted to the Garth barracks.
