Shitiping is located 67 kilometers away from Huadong coastal highway in Fengbin Township, and at the end of the south side of shitiwan. It is a one kilometer long seashore covered with gray white rocks. Strange rocks can be seen everywhere along the coast of shitiping. There are many round holes on the raised coral reefs, which are the places where crabs and tropical fish live and roam. In addition, due to the impact of the waves, there are many potholes on the sea eroded platform with different sizes and depths, in which there are often smooth gravel sliding. Many coastal plants, such as cactus, MAANTANG and so on, grow on the platform near the stone terrace, which are of great ornamental value.

Shitiping is located in Gangkou village, Fengbin Township, Hualien County, Eastern Taiwan. In 1983, shitiping was designated as a nature reserve in Huadong coastal reserve by Taiwan's Ministry of interior. After the establishment of the eastern coastal national scenic area, it was designated as shitiping recreation area.

Development history

Because of the flat and broad coastal terraces, the main access to the sea side of the area is planned as a camping area, and the waterfront trail is laid to lead to the main scenic spots. Here, the rocks on the land stretch into the sea to form Bay Bay, which is large and small. Its shape is like a ladder, and the rows are different in length. During the reign of Emperor Guangxu, when Wu Guangming led his troops to open the road here, he saw these rows of stairs and called it "stone terrace". Later, it was called "stone terrace". Huadong coastal highway deviates from the seaside, and is blocked by terraces in the middle, forming a different pastoral landscape.

There is a stone terrace fishing port next to stone terrace. Originally a small fishing port, stone terrace port is famous for the presence of cetaceans in the open sea in recent years. It is the birthplace of whale watching boats in Taiwan. Shitigang, which existed during the Japanese occupation, used small rubber rafts to catch lice in the early years. Later, the fishing port expanded and became an important town for swordfish. Now it is the fishing port with the highest production of swordfish in Taiwan. It is also a popular place for diving and sea fishing.

Main attractions

Starting from Hualien City, about 70 kilometers south along the coastal highway, you will arrive at Gangkou village, Fengbin Township, Hualien County. Two kilometers north of the village, there is a place called shitiping, which is one of the scenic spots on Huadong coast.

Looking along the fishing port, the arc-shaped coast has beautiful scenery. It is said that in 1543, when a Portuguese ship going to Japan passed here, the crew saw the beautiful scenery of Taiwan from the sea and could not help praising: "Ilha Formosa!" So this island is called "Formosa", which means "beautiful island".

Shitiping recreation area is a one kilometer long seashore covered with gray white rocks and rocks. It was originally a tuff (pyroclastic rock) stratum formed after volcanic eruption. Due to the difference between the soft and hard rocks, after long-term sea erosion, the hard rocks protrude outwards, the soft rocks are concave inwardly, and the rocks incline to the southeast sea with a certain inclination angle, thus forming a stone terrace form.

Because of this, shitiping is famous for its special geology. The whole geological section is about 100 meters: the bottom is about 30 meters thick andesite (a neutral calc alkaline volcanic eruption) lava, the top is covered by white tuff and volcanic conglomerate, and the top of the section is loose gray tuff.

Along the stone footpath, we can deeply observe the topography and geological landscape such as sea erosion ditch, sea erosion cliff, sea erosion platform and raised coral reef. There are many grotesque rocks all over the coast of shitiping. There are many round holes on the raised coral reefs, which are the places where crabs and tropical fish live and roam. Due to the impact of the waves, there are many potholes on the sea erosion platform, which are different in size and depth. There are often smooth gravel sliding inside, and some potholes protrude from the ground like bathtubs.

Many coastal plants, such as cactus, MAANTANG and so on, grow on the platform in shitiping area. They gather in groups and are of great ornamental value.

Standing on the coast of stone terrace with many strange stones, facing the vast blue Pacific Ocean, it's really refreshing to see the waves surging, surging and splashing.

Tourism information

Take the Hualien and dingdong passenger sea line buses from Hualien railway station to Chenggong, Jingpu or Taitung, and get off at shitiping.

From Taitung railway station, take the dingdong and Hualien passenger sea line bus to Hualien and get off at shitiping.
