During the period of national Wuhan University, the engineering subjects of Wuhan University were concentrated in the Institute of technology of national Wuhan University. From 1952 to 1953, the government of the people's Republic of China adjusted the departments of the University, and the engineering subjects of Wuhan University were transferred out. Most of the majors, together with the engineering majors of Hunan University and Guangxi University, established Huazhong Institute of technology, while the water conservancy and hydropower specialty was established in 1954 Wuhan University of water conservancy.

After the reform and opening up in 1978, Wuhan University began to gradually rebuild engineering. In 2000, Wuhan University merged with Wuhan University of water resources and electric power, Wuhan University of Surveying and mapping technology, and Hubei Medical University. After the reform and opening up, the electrical, civil engineering, construction, mechanical and other majors reconstructed by Wuhan University merged with the corresponding majors of the above three universities to form the Engineering Department of Wuhan University.
