Synopsis

Old lady Ethel and her husband Norman left the noisy city life and went to the old house where they used to live, a wooden house by the pond, to start their life again. Nearly seventy year old Ethel is full of enthusiasm for life, while seventy-nine year old Norman is on the contrary, depressed and eccentric. The beautiful scenery by the golden pond and his wife's meticulous care did not help old Norman get rid of the fear of aging. Norman's heart trouble filled him with fear of death. Before filming, Katherine Hepburn injured her arm in a tennis match and decided to quit the film, but Henry tried to persuade her. There is a scene where Katherine Hepburn drags a canoe with pain in her arm, but this part is omitted from the film.

While filming Norman and Billy clinging to the rocks for survival, Henry Fonda and Doug McKeen had to wear diving suits because of the extremely low temperature of the lake.

Katherine Hepburn refused to put on her diving suit to ensure the real effect when shooting the scene of Ethel jumping into the water.

"Golden pond" is adapted from Ernest Thompson's play of the same name. Jane fondat bought the right to shoot the film for her father Henry fondat. The father and daughter in the film are the epitome of fondat's father and daughter in real life.

View shooting

When the film officially started shooting, the producer chose the location of shooting in Squam Lake in central New Hampshire, USA. The house in the film belongs to a doctor in Squam lake. After renting the house, the crew made corresponding changes to the house. The second floor as a balcony in the film was built according to the requirements of the art director.
