Yili building is located at No.4, Zhongshan East 1st Road, Bund. It was originally the property of Tianxiang foreign company. It was built in 1860 and is a three story brick and wood structure house. After reconstruction in 1916, it was the building seen today.

Intertek was founded by British businessman Adamson and bell, mainly engaged in import and export trade and insurance business. With the continuous expansion of business, the original house is no longer enough to use, coupled with the new buildings on both sides, the old building is even more obsolete. However, at that time, Intertek could not afford enough funds to rebuild the new building, so it cooperated with a number of foreign firms to rebuild the new building. After the completion of the new building, the real estate will be allocated according to the proportion of funds from all parties. Therefore, in the early Chinese map, this building was called "United building". There are many banks and insurance companies in this building, but somehow, people just remember "favorable bank".

Its head office was in London, England, formerly known as "China Commercial Bank in London, India", and later merged with "Asia chartered foreign bank". In 1854, it opened a branch in Shanghai, becoming one of the first foreign banks to enter Shanghai. Around 1936, advantageous bank acquired part of the building for 80000 pounds.

Basic introduction

Union building, one of the Bund buildings in Shanghai, is located at Bund 3 (formerly Bund 4).

Completed in 1916, the building is owned by British Tianxiang foreign company. In 1914, it was jointly leased by security and Baojia insurance companies. The original 3-storey brick and wood structure house was converted into a 6-storey building. It is the first work designed by Gonghe foreign company in Shanghai and the first building with steel frame structure in Shanghai. The building covers an area of 2241 square meters and a building area of 13760 square meters. As the side along the Bund is not wide enough, the main entrance is set at 17 Guangdong Road. Imitating the Renaissance architectural style, the facade is composed of three sections, balanced and symmetrical, but the facade decoration adopts luxurious baroque style whirlpool pattern in many places. A tower Pavilion is designed at the top of the corner, with a spherical dome at the top. The early Chinese name of the building was "Youning building".

At the beginning of the battle of Songhu in 1937, the insurance company was unable to guarantee the war losses and frozen the funds. The British bank took the opportunity to purchase the property right of the building. In 1949, Yili bank withdrew from Shanghai. In 1953, Shanghai Civil Architecture Design Institute rented the building. In 1997, Singapore Jiatong Private Investment Co., Ltd. bought the property through the Bund house replacement. In January 2004, it was rebuilt as "Bund 3", a high-end shopping and consumption place.

The favorable building covers an area of 2241 square meters, with a construction area of 13760 square meters, 6 floors high and 7 floors at the entrance. Gonghe design, yuchangtai construction plant construction. As the block is trapezoidal, it is narrow from north to South and wide from east to west. It is only 30 meters east facing and 70 meters north facing. In the usual architectural design, the long side is usually used as the main facade. However, as the Bund is the most expensive area in Shanghai, a place in the Bund is a symbol of wealth, power and status. Therefore, the East and north sides of the building become the main facade of the building.

Frame structure

Yili building is the first building in Shanghai to adopt steel frame structure. The steel frame is customized to the famous Krupp factory in Germany. In the overall design of the building, the eclecticism method of combining neoclassicism with modernism is adopted. Three section facade with Baroque decoration. There are slender Ionic columns on both sides of the gate, with grooves on the columns; the panes are decorated with rotary patterns, and the external walls are faced with granite; there are balconies and iron railings on the third and fifth floors; there are tower pavilions on the top floor, and double columns are used to support the dome and brake rod on all sides. The whole facade is constructed by vertical lines, giving people a bright, simple and smooth feeling. The interior is divided into East and West, with corridor in the middle; the rooms on both sides are large bay, about 4 meters high, with wooden floor; the downstairs used to be the business hall, with water ground.
