Shaanxi University of science and technology is the only interdisciplinary university with the characteristics of light industry in Western China. It is the National Construction University of "basic capacity construction project of universities in central and Western China". It is a high-level university in Shaanxi Province during the "12th Five Year Plan". It is also a key University jointly constructed by Shaanxi Provincial People's government, China Light Industry Federation and China Light Industry Corporation. Founded in 1958 as Beijing Institute of light industry, it was the first light industry university in New China. In 1970, it moved to Xianyang, Shaanxi, and was renamed Northwest Institute of light industry. In 1978, it was designated as one of the 88 key universities in China by the State Council. In 1998, it was transferred to Shaanxi Province to implement the system of central and local co construction and local management; In 2002, approved by the Ministry of education, it was renamed Shaanxi University of science and technology; in 2006, the main body of the University moved to Xi'an.

The school has two campuses in Xi'an and Xianyang, with a total area of 2003 Mu and a construction area of 1184000 square meters. Xi'an campus covers an area of 1590 mu, with reasonable planning, complete functions, advanced facilities and beautiful environment. It is located on the Bank of the beautiful Bahe River and Weiyang lake. There are more than 1200 full-time teachers, nearly 600 with senior professional and technical titles, and more than 22600 full-time students, including nearly 2400 doctoral and master's degree students. The library has a collection of 2.1 million books.

The school always takes talent training as the fundamental task, and constantly improves the quality of education and teaching. In 2011, it was selected as the second batch of Pilot Universities of "excellent engineer plan" of the Ministry of education. In recent years, it has achieved good results in national and provincial "quality engineering" and "undergraduate teaching engineering" projects, and its overall level ranks in the forefront of provincial universities. According to the data from the science and technology development center of the Ministry of education, in 2013, our university ranked the 21st in the number of authorized patents of national universities and the first in provincial universities; in the number of effective patents of national universities at the end of 2013, our university ranked the 41st in the number of national universities. In 2007, the people's Government of Shaanxi Province established a Provincial Research Institute - Shaanxi agricultural products processing technology research institute relying on the school.
