The college is located in Nanchang Economic and Technological Development Zone. It is the only comprehensive college in Jiangxi Province to cultivate professional technical and management talents for transportation construction. The college was founded in 1956, formerly known as Nanchang highway engineering school, under the Ministry of communications. In 1958, the school was upgraded to an undergraduate college, renamed Jiangxi Jiaotong University, and trained four undergraduate graduates. Later, due to the adjustment of national policies, only the technical secondary school, namely Jiangxi Jiaotong school, was retained. In 1993, the school was rated as a provincial key technical secondary school; in 2000, it was approved by the Ministry of education as one of the first batch of national key technical secondary schools; in 2002, it was upgraded to Jiangxi communications vocational and technical college with the approval of Jiangxi Provincial People's government. The college covers four disciplines: Engineering, literature, economics and management. There are 6 departments, 1 Department and 24 Higher Vocational Majors in road and Bridge Engineering Department, automobile engineering department, water transportation engineering department, management engineering department, information engineering department, mechanical and electrical engineering department and basic courses department (Humanities Department). The college is the only college in Jiangxi Province to undertake the training task of skilled talents in the field of construction and automobile maintenance. The highway and bridge engineering and automobile application technology majors of the college were listed as the Provincial College demonstration majors in 2004 by the Provincial Department of education.
