Hunan University of technology is a multidisciplinary university with a history of more than 50 years. It is a "doctoral talent training project serving the special needs of the country". In February 2006, with the approval of the Ministry of education, the University changed its name from Zhuzhou Institute of technology to Hunan University of technology. In the same year, Zhuzhou normal college and Hunan metallurgy vocational and technical college were merged.

Characterized by packaging education, the school is the first member unit accepted by iapri in China, the director unit of Packaging Education Committee of China Packaging Federation, and the only vice president unit of China Packaging Federation and China Packaging Technology Training Center among colleges and universities in China.

In 1995, as the first batch of experimental institutions, the university took the lead in passing the undergraduate teaching qualification assessment of the former State Education Commission. In 2003, the University was approved by the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council as a master's degree granting authority unit. In 2008, it was rated as an excellent university for undergraduate teaching level evaluation by the Ministry of education; in 2009, it obtained the recruitment qualification of foreign students; in 2010, it passed the quality evaluation of postgraduate training process with excellent results; in 2013, it was awarded the "top 50 universities with typical employment experience of National Graduates"; at the end of 2013, it was awarded the enrollment right of "doctoral talent training project serving national special needs", and began to recruit doctoral students in 2014.

The school has two campuses, covering a total area of 3388 mu. The new library covers an area of 36000 square meters, with a collection of more than 2.6 million books. The total value of teaching and scientific research equipment is 1860.03 million yuan, and 6278 computers are used for teaching. The school has a more advanced computer network service system, built a standard plastic track and field playground, gymnasium and various sports venues to meet the needs of physical education.

The university has 18 teaching colleges (departments) and 1 independent college, and has established a discipline system with engineering as the main body and coordinated development of engineering, science, management, arts, economics, law, education and art; 1 "doctoral personnel training project serving the special needs of the country", 11 master's degree programs of first-class disciplines, covering 50 second-class master's degree programs and 9 authorized fields of master's degree; There are 60 undergraduate majors, 1 national teaching team and 4 provincial teaching teams, 1 national experimental teaching demonstration center and 6 provincial basic course demonstration laboratory practice teaching demonstration center, 4 national characteristic majors, 12 provincial characteristic majors, 8 provincial key majors, 3 National Excellent Courses and 19 provincial excellent courses. There are 37907 full-time students, including 1276 postgraduates. There are 2507 teaching staff and 1830 full-time teachers, including 285 professors, 606 associate professors, 232 doctors, 10 doctoral supervisors and 298 master supervisors; There are 10 people who enjoy the "special allowance of the State Council Government", 1 science and technology leader of Hunan Province, 3 national excellent teachers, 6 provincial excellent teachers, 5 provincial famous teachers, 18 provincial young backbone teachers (2011-2013), 13 provincial young teachers teaching experts; 21 people have entered the "121 Talents Project" and "100 Talents Project" of Hunan Province, 5 people have entered the ranks of provincial discipline leaders; 6 academicians of the two academies are employed.

The school has established a discipline system with engineering as the main subject and coordinated development of engineering, science, management, literature, economics, law, education and art. It has five key disciplines in Hunan Province, including biomedical engineering, material science and engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering and civil engineering; It has established three provincial and ministerial key laboratories, including "green packaging and bio nanotechnology application", "advanced packaging materials and technology", and five provincial and ministerial research bases, including "product packaging innovation industrial design center" and "packaging design art and technology research base"; With Hunan No.5 Engineering Co., Ltd. and Zhuzhou Xiawan building materials Co., Ltd., Hunan Engineering Technology Research Center of "building wall energy-saving new materials" was jointly established; with CSR Zhuzhou Electric Locomotive Research Institute Co., Ltd. and other high-tech enterprises, Hunan University postgraduate training innovation base and Hunan University industry university research cooperation demonstration base were jointly constructed.

In recent years, the university has undertaken 10 national education reform projects and 235 provincial and ministerial education reform projects, won 1 National Teaching Achievement Award and 41 provincial teaching achievement awards, owned 5 provincial key disciplines, 3 provincial and ministerial key laboratories and 13 provincial and ministerial research bases (including technology centers), published 12407 academic research papers, 971 of which were included in SCI, EI and ISTP; It has undertaken 117 national level scientific research projects, 1223 provincial and ministerial level scientific research projects, won 4 second prizes of national level scientific and technological progress, 1 first prize of Hunan natural science, 73 provincial and ministerial level scientific and technological achievement awards, and 191 patents. The project of "industrial development of key technologies and complete sets of equipment for special indoor environment purification" led and undertaken by the school won the third batch of major science and technology projects of the Provincial Department of science and technology in 2010. "Key technology and demonstration of energy saving in cold winter and hot summer areas" was funded by the national "12th Five Year" science and technology support project.

Dongguan packaging college has been established in Guangdong Province as a practical teaching base and talent service window in coastal areas; The "global low carbon city joint research center" jointly established with the Chinese Academy of social sciences has completed the major scientific research project of China's low carbon city ranking through a survey of nearly 100 cities in China. Since 2011, it has jointly released the green paper on China's low carbon city development; It has signed a comprehensive science and technology cooperation agreement with Zhuzhou Municipal People's government, and organized 11 project leaders to sign industry university research cooperation agreements with relevant units in Zhuzhou City; it has established a comprehensive cooperation relationship with domestic well-known high-tech enterprises and national key construction areas such as Zhuzhou CSR times group and Zhuzhou Qingshuitang circular economy demonstration zone; The school has also hosted large international academic conferences such as "2010 Beijing International Packaging Expo · China Packaging Education Exhibition".

At present, the university has established a wide range of scientific research cooperation and academic exchanges with Michigan State University, Stuttgart University of Applied Science and technology, Reims University, Yonsei University, City University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong Polytechnic University and other well-known universities at home and abroad, and has jointly trained doctoral candidates with Southeast University, Central South University and more than 10 other universities in China.
