According to reports, "Sun Yat sen University" is an ocean comprehensive scientific research practice ship with the largest designed displacement and the strongest comprehensive scientific research performance in China, with a displacement of 6880 tons and a endurance of 15000 nautical miles.
"This is a new generation of large-scale marine comprehensive scientific research practice ship with high configuration, strong ability and highly integrated innovative technology." Zhang Wenlong, chief architect of China Ship Jiangnan Shipbuilding "Sun Yat sen University", said that the ship adopts DC bus + battery energy storage technology. The stern is equipped with two sets of gear full rotation main propulsion devices driven by permanent magnet motors, and the bow is equipped with two sets of rim permanent magnet side thrust devices, which has DP1 dynamic positioning capability, It is a new generation of large-scale marine integrated scientific research ship with global navigation capability and can operate adjacent to polar ice area.

As a new generation of marine comprehensive scientific research ship, "Sun Yat sen University" has many "firsts" in domestic scientific research ships. According to Wu Gang, chief designer of the ship and assistant director of No. 708 Institute of China Shipbuilding Corporation, the ship first used L-type full rotation low-noise propeller, flange permanent magnet side thrust, DC bus + energy storage battery combination design, and full speed active fin stabilizer in domestic scientific research ships.
Recently, the successful sea trial of "Sun Yat sen University" shows that the ship has excellent safety, economy and maneuverability, highly integrated innovative technology, and equipped with a large number of advanced scientific instruments and equipment, which can meet the needs of scientific investigation, scientific research and personnel training in the fields of marine science, marine engineering and Technology (materials, communications, etc.) and marine humanities.

It is reported that the "Sun Yat sen University" project was approved by the Ministry of education in June 2016. In October 2019, it was built in Jiangnan Shipbuilding. It was named and launched in August 2020. In June 2021, it was successfully completed and put into use.
