[plant morphology] Prunella

Perennial herbs, 50-80 cm high. Rhizome transverse, bamboo like, surface yellow, white inside, with strip root. Stem erect, tufted, slightly angulate, nodes slightly expanded, smooth. Leaf blade ovate elliptic, 6-10 cm long, 2-4 cm wide, apex acuminate or long acuminate, base rounded or broadly cuneate, margin shallowly serrate. 1-5 flowers integrated into cymes; calyx long tubular, apex 5-lobed, lobes apically ovate, with 10 veins; petals 5, orange red, apex irregularly lobed, base narrow into claws, scales between petals 2; stamens 10, alternate with petals; ovary cylindrical, style 5. Capsule with persistent calyx, apex 5-toothed; seeds often deposited. The flowering period is July. The fruit period is from September to October.

It grows in shady and wet places in sparse forest on hillside or grass on forest edge. It is distributed in Central China, Zhejiang, Jiangxi and other places.
