[collection] lotus leaves were taken from July to September, and the leaves around the leaf base and petiole were cut off, dried or fresh.

[medicinal material] the dried petiole is usually cut into round or rhombic shape, about 6-7 cm in diameter. The front is purplish brown or greenish yellow, slightly waxy powdery, the veins are slightly concave, radiating out from the center; the back is yellowish brown, with residual petiole base in the center, and the veins are protruding. The quality is light and crisp. It tastes astringent. Thick, dry, light green and unbroken leaves are preferred.

It is mainly produced in Jiangsu Province.

[chemical constituents] nelumbinine, protonelumbinine and nelumbinine are contained in the pedicel of lotus leaf.

[pharmacological action] Liensinine poisoning dose can cause convulsion in frog, mouse, rabbit and dog (similar to strychnine); intravenous injection of 5-7 mg / kg in anesthetized dogs can reduce blood pressure by 30-50 mmHg for 20-30 minutes, and higher dose can cause paroxysmal spasm without lowering blood pressure.
