Fig

Deciduous shrubs or small trees, up to 10 meters high, with milk. Many branches, branchlets stout, surface brown, by sparse short hair. Leaves alternate, obovate or suborbicular, 10-20 cm long, 3-5-lobed, rarely undivided, base heart-shaped, lobes usually obovate, apex obtuse, with irregular teeth; palmate veins distinct, dark green above, rough below, hairy, thick leathery; petiole 2-5 cm long, smooth or hairy. The flowers are monoecious, white and mostly on the inner wall of the total receptacle; the receptacle is pear shaped, 5-8 cm long at maturity, greenish or brownish blue, smooth and fleshy. The male flower grows between the bracts near the mouth of the receptacle, with 2-6 perianths, linear, 1 stamen, filiform, slender petiole, twice as long as the perianth; the female perianth has 4 perianths, broadly linear, superior ovary, elliptic, as long as the perianth; the achene is triangular ovate, endosperm rich, embryo curved. It blooms in summer. The fruit ripening stage is autumn.

It is cultivated all over the country.

[collection] harvest in autumn and dry repeatedly after harvest. This product is easy to be moulded, so it should be stored in a dry place or lime jar.

[medicinal material] the dried receptacle is oblong or quasi spherical, about 2 cm long, about 1.5-2.5 cm in diameter; the surface is yellowish brown to dark brown, bluish black, with wavy curved longitudinal edges; the top is slightly truncated, the center has a round protuberance, the base is narrow, with fruit stalk and residual bracts. It is hard, yellow and white in cross section, with many small achenes on the inner wall, and sometimes withered male flowers on the upper part. Achenes ovate or trigonous ovate, about 1-2 mm long, pale yellow, with persistent calyx envelope. It's very sweet. It is better to be dry, bluish black or dark brown without mould.

It is produced all over the south.
