[collection] in autumn, the fruits are harvested when they become hot, and the pods are cut off and dried in the sun.

[medicinal materials] the dried pods are cylindrical, slightly flat, 6-10 cm long, slightly uplifted on both sides, brownish yellow on the edge, with purple brown long and wide band in the center, extending from the tip to the other end, and with many rows of transverse convex lines formed by transverse septum protrusion; the surface is rough, with white dots and sparse fine hairs. Base with long stipe. The inner surface of pericarp has brown septum juxtaposed longitudinally. Most of the seeds are ovate and flat, one end slightly pointed, 3-4 mm in diameter, flat, with oblique black stripe hilum at the top, dark green on both sides, brown oval spots in the center, white fine reticulation around when just mature, and gradually falling off and smooth after storage. It's hard. It is fragrant and rich in mucus. It is better that the pod is long, dry, not broken, the seed does not fall off and there is no fruit stalk.

It is mainly produced in Jiangsu Province. It is also produced in Zhejiang, Jiangxi, Fujian and Guangxi.

[chemical constituents] the seeds contain chrysophanol, chrysophanol and aloe emodin. The seed oil contains linoleic acid, oleic acid, palmitic acid, stearic acid and tetradecanoic acid, and the unsaponifiable part also contains sitosterol. It also contains toxic protein and volatile oil. The peel contains apigenin.

[pharmacological action] seeds have diarrhoeal effect, which is related to emodin, and have obvious toxicity, which is related to toxic protein, but because of its antigenic property, dogs can be immunized.
