[plant morphology] Pennisetum

Perennial herbs. Vegetative stem and sporangium stem are similar, single or clustered, branched or unbranched, slender, with nodes, mostly hollow, usually up to 1 m high, about 2-15 mm in diameter, with 6-30 ribs on the surface, smooth or with a row of dense spiny processes, and two rows of stomata in the groove. If there are 1 or 2-3 branchlets, and 4-5 branchlets, the branchlets may be re branched. The leaf sheath is usually tubular or funnel-shaped, close to each other, short or slightly elongated. The apex is dentate. The teeth are persistent or exfoliate, leaving a truncated, rounded or triangular base. The sporangium spike is about 2.5 cm long, with a short tip or a small protruding tip at the top. There are 6-9 sporangia, which are arranged in a row at the lower edge of the sporophyll. The spores are spherical in shape, with two filamentous elasticles. They are crisscross in shape and wound on the spores. When they meet with water, they pop open for reproduction.

It grows on the side of stream, ditch, sandy soil or clay. It is distributed in South China, Southwest China and the middle and upper reaches of the Yangtze River.

[medicinal material] the dried whole grass is a slender branched cylindrical stem, light green to yellowish green, about 60 cm long. The surface is rough, with longitudinal grooves and many nodes. The internodes are 5-8 cm long, and some are as long as 13 cm. It is easy to break when it is dry, tough and hollow when it is wet. The leaf sheath is short tubular and close to the stem. The base and blunt teeth are dark brown. It is better to be thick, green, long and thick.

Adults use 1-2 liang of fresh grass or 1 liang of dry grass every day, boiling water as tea. According to the observation of 82 cases, most of them had increased urine volume, improved appetite and jaundice. It may be related to the effect of diuresis, jaundice and heat clearing.
