Climbing shrubs. Rhizome tuberous, with obvious nodules, with many fibrous roots. Stems without spines. The leaves are simple, alternate, leathery, lanceolate to elliptic, lanceolate, 6-20 cm long and 1.2-5 cm wide, apex acuminate, base rounded, entire, often powdered below, with 3-5 basal veins; petiole 1-2 cm long, slightly winged, with spreading leaf sheath near base, with 2 tendrils at the apex. Flowers unisexual, dioecious; umbels axillary, peduncles very short; peduncles slender, base with many persistent triangular bracteoles; flowers small, white, diameter about 4 mm; perianth lobes 6,2-whorled; stamens of male flowers 6, filaments shorter than anthers, pistillodes absent; staminodes of female flowers linear, ovary superior, 3-locular, stigma 3-divergent, slightly reversed. Berry globose, 6-8 mm in diameter, red. The flowering period is from July to August. The fruit period is from September to October.
It grows on hillside, barren mountain and semi shady land near forest. It is distributed in Anhui, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Fujian, Guangdong, Guangxi, Jiangxi, Hunan, Hubei, Sichuan, Guizhou, etc.

It is mainly produced in Guangdong, Hunan, Hubei, Zhejiang, Sichuan and Anhui, and also in Fujian, Jiangxi, Guangxi and Jiangsu.
