[plant morphology] Polygonum cuspidatum

Annual creeping herb, 30-50 cm long. More fibrous roots, yellowish. The stem is square, green with purple, pubescent, rooting at nodes, fleshy. The leaf blade is round to heart-shaped, ovoid, 1-1.5 cm long and 1-2 cm wide. The apex is obtuse, the base is heart-shaped, and the edge is coarsely serrated. The upper part is green and the lower part is light green. The veins are palmate, 5-7 in number. The veins on the leaf surface are sparsely short hairy, and the dorsal veins are raised and villous. The flowers are small, lavender, solitary in leaf axils or opposite to leaves; pedicel 1-2 cm long, base inflated; calyx base connate, pot shaped, calyx teeth 5-lobed, lobes long and narrow, bell shaped, margin with prickles; corolla symmetrical, 2-lipped, upper lip 2-lobed, lower lip 3-lobed; stamen 5, inserted on corolla tube; ovary inferior, 2-locular, stigma 2-lobed. Berry, elliptic, 1-1.5 cm long, purple blue, calyx teeth persistent, containing most of the seeds. The seeds are small, bright red and ovoid. The flowering period is from April to May.

Born in the edge of wet field, or in the shade of mountain forest. It is distributed in southwest, South China, Hunan, Hubei, Jiangxi, Zhejiang, Fujian and Taiwan.
