[plant morphology] sand needle

Evergreen shrub, 2-3m high. Branchlets angulate, glabrous, green. Leaves alternate, leathery, oblong lanceolate or subobovate oblong, 1.5-5 cm long and 0.6-2 cm wide, apex acute, base cuneate, midrib protruding below; petiole short or subsessile, glabrous. The flowers are small, axillary, heterozygous, yellow green, fragrant, with 2-8 male flowers arranged in cymes. The total pedicel is 6-7mm long, angulate; the pedicel is short; the female flowers are usually solitary; perianth lobes are 3, triangular, tweezers arranged, with a bundle of hairs at the base inside. Drupe subglobose or obovate globose, red when ripe, ca. 9 mm long. The flowering period is from March to October.

It grows in rocks, riverbanks or shrubs on hillsides. It is distributed in Sichuan, Yunnan and Guangxi.
