[plant morphology] Zanthoxylum bungeanum

Deciduous shrub, 1-2m high. Stem branches unarmed or prickly, glabrous, or densely pubescent in young parts. Leaflets ovate lanceolate, oblong elliptic, ovate, ovate oblong, 2.5-6 cm long, 1-3.5 cm wide, apex acute, base acute or broadly cuneate, margin slightly serrate, or almost entire, papery, usually densely glandular; petioles very short, sometimes with basal prickles. Flowers unisexual, dioecious; cymose panicle, terminal, 3-6 cm long; perianth 5-8, cyan; male perianth triangular, stamens 5-7, sparse 4 or 8; female perianth ovoid to broadly ovoid, carpel 4-6, sparse 7, mature carpel red purple, carpel base with significantly elongated ovary stalk. Mericarps split along dorsal and ventral seams. Seeds ovate, black. The flowering period is from April to June. The fruit period is from July to September.

It grows under the forest or in the bush or beside the road. It is distributed in Jiangxi, Hunan, Guizhou, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Anhui and other places.
