Body length, trunk slightly cylindrical, tail side flat, abdominal round, no abdominal ridge. The body length can reach more than 90 cm. Mouth end position, curved, no need. The maxilla is slightly longer than the mandible. The eye is small, located on both sides of the head, and the eye diameter is smaller than the snout length. The hypopharyngeal teeth are 2 rows, flat and comb shaped, with transverse grooves on the side of the teeth. The scales are of medium size, and the lateral scales are 39-46. The dorsal fin is Ⅲ 7, and its starting point is opposite to the ventral fin. Anal fin Ⅲ 8. The dorsal fin and gluteal fin had no hard spines. The body is tea yellow, the abdomen is gray white, the chest and abdominal fins are slightly gray yellow, and the other fins are dark.

They live in rivers and lakes, and generally like to live in the lower layer of water and near shore where there are many aquatic plants. The sex is lively. It feeds on grass. The oviposition period is from April to July. In winter, it overwinters deep in the lake. Rivers and lakes are distributed in the plains of North and South China. It is one of the fish culture in China.
