[plant morphology] diaozhumei

Perennial herbs. Stems slightly weak, semisucculent, branched, scattered or pendulous, ca. 1 m long, glabrous or sparsely hairy. Leaves sessile; elliptic ovate to oblong, 3-7 cm long and 1.5-3 cm wide, apex short pointed, purple green and silver white on the top, purple stripes on the middle edge, purple red on the bottom, top and base of sheath or all covered with sparse hairs. Flowers clustered in a large and a small terminal bracteate leaf; sepals 3, connate into a cylindrical tube, ca. 6 mm long; corolla tube white, slender, ca. 1 cm long, lobes 3, rose, ca. 3 mm long; stamens 6; ovary 3-locular. The fruit is a capsule. The flowering time is uncertain.

It is often cultivated in garden or basin; it is wild on the wet grassland beside mountain, village and ditch. It is cultivated in Fujian, Guangdong and Guangxi.

[chemical constituents] the stems and leaves contain calcium oxalate and gum.

[pharmacological action] the decoction and water extract of leaves and stems (adding alcohol to remove the precipitates) have excitatory effect on isolated ileum of guinea pigs, but have no obvious effect on isolated uterus of rats, isolated heart and duodenum of rabbits. Intravenous injection of 0.1g (crude drug) / kg does not affect blood pressure in anesthetized dogs. The results showed that the water extract had vasodilating effect in the hind limb perfusion test of rats.

Two mice died within 24 hours after intraperitoneal injection of 1G (crude drug) of decoction, but the water extract had no obvious toxicity.
