Red fennel root

[plant morphology] fennel with narrow leaf, also known as: Eriocheir sinensis, Eriocheir sinensis, Osmanthus fragrans, fennel (Zhejiang Tianmu yam plant records), Eriocheir sinensis, fennel, Eriocheir sinensis, Photinia heterophylla, tiekusan, mentongxiang, fennel, and fennel (Zhejiang folk herbs).
Small evergreen trees, up to 8 m tall. Bark grayish brown. Leaves alternate, sometimes pseudowhorled, leathery, oblanceolate or lanceolate, 5-12 cm long and 1.5-4 cm wide, apex acuminate, base cuneate, entire; petiole 5-10 mm long. Flowers solitary or 2-3 in leaf axils. Pedicel 1-3 cm long; perianth 11-14 pieces, outer ring 3 pieces yellow green, calyx flake, the smallest, the second round 3 pieces yellow green slightly red, the third round 3 pieces dark red, base yellow green, fleshy, inner ring 4-5 pieces, dark red; stamens 7-11. The fruit consists of 9-13 seeds, arranged in a star shape, with a long and curved tip at the tip, and dehiscent on the inside at maturity. The seed is oval and brown. The flowering period is from May to June. The fruit period is from August to October.
It grows in the mixed woods on both sides of the wet valley. It is distributed in the provinces and regions south of the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River.

[collection] it can be harvested all year round. After the roots are dug up, the soil impurities are removed, and the slices are dried in the sun. After digging up the root bark, cut it into small sections and sun it until half dry. Then cut the bark with a knife to remove the xylem.
The root is cylindrical, often irregularly curved, usually 2-3cm in diameter, with rough and brown surface, with obvious transverse cracks and longitudinal wrinkles caused by drying shrinkage, and a few corks are easy to peel off, showing brown skin. It is hard and not easy to break. The section is light brown, and the periphery is reddish brown. The xylem accounts for most of the root, and concentric rings (rings) can be seen. It is fragrant and pungent. The root bark is irregular, different in size, slightly curly, 1-2 mm thick, brown in appearance, with longitudinal wrinkles and a few transverse cracks. The inner surface is reddish brown, smooth, with longitudinal texture. The quality is firm and crisp, the section is slightly neat, and the gas and taste have the same root. It is better to be dry and free from mud.

[clinical application] treatment of rheumatic joint or muscle pain
Take the root bark of red fennel to make 5% injection, and inject directly into the pain area (not into the joint cavity), 0.5-2 ml each time, once every 1-2 days, generally 3-7 times as a course of treatment. 541 cases of joint and muscle pain caused by rheumatism or trauma were treated. The results showed that 295 cases were cured, 128 cases were markedly effective, 70 cases were improved, 48 cases were ineffective, and the effective rate was more than 90%. According to the observation, red fennel injection should be used for rheumatic pain of cold type in TCM syndrome differentiation, not for patients with heat syndrome, but should not be used for patients with joint redness and swelling, ESR or rheumatic active stage with elevated anti "O". Generally, the local pain was slightly felt on the day of injection, aggravated on the second day, and gradually relieved on the third day. The pain could be eliminated after 3-5 injections. The more severe the pain, the better the curative effect.
