Perennial twining herbs, several meters long, whole plant nearly glabrous. The rhizome is long, stout and yellowish brown. Branchlets with longitudinal stripes. The tender leaves are slightly hairy, later smooth or yellow green hairy on the back. Flowers axillary, small, 3-4 mm in diameter, yellow green, dioecious, male flowers usually with 6 calyx, petals 6-9, stamens about 20; female flowers usually with 3 carpels.
