A Chinese Ghost Story

"The ghost of a beautiful girl" is an ancient costume love film supervised by Tsui Hark, directed by Cheng Xiaodong, starring Zhang Guorong, Wang Zuxian and Wu Ma. It was released in Hong Kong, China on July 18, 1987.

The film is a remake of the film of the same name produced by Shao in 1960. It tells the story of a ghost love between scholar Ning caichen and female ghost Nie Xiaoqian. The film has won the special jury award of the 16th French science fiction film festival, the best film award of the Portuguese science fiction film festival, and the best adapted script award of the 24th Golden Horse Award of Taiwan film.

Synopsis

Ning caichen (played by Zhang Guorong) goes to Guobei county to collect money. In case of heavy rain, he hides in lanruo temple, where there are various legends, for the night. However, Yan Chixia (played by Wu Ma), a Taoist in the temple, refuses. Therefore, Ning caichen sneaks into the temple. At night, Ning caichen is attracted by the sound of a zither, and meets Nie Xiaoqian (Wang Zuxian). Nie Xiaoqian suddenly dew kill, fortunately Yan Chixia arrived, save Ning caichen a life. Nie Xiaoqian felt that she was honest and kind, and gradually became loving, but she was stopped by Yan Chixia. Ning caichen mistakenly recognizes Yan Chixia as a murderer and wants to escape with Nie Xiaoqian.

The tree demon grandma (Liu Zhaoming) forces Nie Xiaoqian to kill Ning caichen, but Nie Xiaoqian refuses. So grandma orders the demons to kill Ning caichen and Nie Xiaoqian. Yan Chixia appears and saves them. After the war between the tree demon grandma and Yan Chixia, they are sealed by the palm thunder for 100 years.

At this time, Ning caichen learned that Nie Xiaoqian was a ghost. Because her bones were abandoned in the wilderness, she was under the control of her grandmother. Every night, she looked for a strong man to absorb Yang essence for her grandmother, so as to prolong her life. In order to avoid Nie Xiaoqian being humiliated again, Ning caichen promised to send his bones back to his hometown for burial and reincarnation. Unexpectedly, Nie Xiaoqian was robbed by the old demon in the underground for his wife. Yan Chixia can't stand the bitter request of Ning caichen, so she decides to rescue Xiaoqian again.
