According to a report on the website of the South China Morning Post in Hong Kong on December 16, China launched the first batch of satellites of a giant satellite Internet, joining the competition for space-based broadband Internet services at home and abroad.
According to Xinhua News Agency, at 18:00 local time on the 16th, China successfully launched a group of satellites into orbit using the Long March 5B carrier rocket/Yuanzheng 2 upper stage at the Wenchang Space Launch Site.
Chinese official media did not immediately announce the number of satellites launched.
The plan, known as the "State Grid", was first announced in 2020, when China submitted an application to the International Telecommunication Union to build a satellite Internet consisting of nearly 13000 satellites.
The "State Grid" is often seen as aimed at providing global broadband Internet coverage while meeting China's national security goals. The plan is managed by China Satellite Network Group Co., Ltd., which was established in 2021 and headquartered in Xiong'an.
This year, a similar satellite Internet program called "Qianfan Constellation" launched 54 satellites through three missions, which was supported by the Shanghai Municipal Government. The goal is to operate nearly 650 satellites in orbit by the end of next year, and achieve global Internet coverage by 2027.
In the global satellite Internet competition, the "Star Chain" of the Space Exploration Technology Company took the lead, with more than 6700 satellites in orbit.
At the same time, the satellite Internet of One Network, headquartered in London, has more than 600 satellites.
According to the regulations of the International Telecommunication Union, satellite Internet operators must achieve specific phased objectives to retain their frequency use rights.
According to the plan, the "State Grid" will deploy 1300 satellites by 2029, 6500 satellites by 2032, and complete the deployment of satellite Internet by 2035.
As various parties compete for limited space in low Earth orbit, the competition for global satellite launches is becoming increasingly fierce. In this orbit, the transmission delay during satellite operation is lower, which can provide faster Internet speed.
The Long March 5B carrier rocket is one of China's most powerful rockets, capable of delivering payloads weighing up to 25 tons into low Earth orbit.
