In 2014, he directed the movie "watching the sea" and won the best film award of the 2nd Golden Panda North America International micro Film Festival. On the evening of April 16, 2015, he appeared on the red carpet of the opening ceremony of the 5th Beijing International Film Festival with directors Tang Jili, Hu Mei and Feng Xiaoning. In 2018, his film "the child in the sky" was shortlisted in the 42nd Montreal International Film Festival Competition and won the best debut award. The next year, the film won the best debut award of the 26th Beijing University Film Festival, and Xu Lei himself was nominated for best director. In the same year, he won the best director award of the 9th kinkoala International Chinese Film Festival.
