Tongcheng song is a kind of local melody originated in Tongcheng City, Anhui Province. It is a kind of verse form created by the working people. Tongcheng popular songs (love songs) in the Ming Dynasty were widely spread in Huangmei area of Hubei Province and Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Wu dialect areas. They were famous for their unique seven character five sentence style, tactful and concise language and beautiful melody. They were widely sung and even published in popular areas. Tongcheng song is the main folk song in the period of Anhui ballad prevalence, which has a positive impact on the formation and development of Huangmei Opera in Hunan, Hubei, Jiangxi and Western Zhejiang.
