Introduction to Qilin dance (Zhangmutou Qilin dance)
Applicant: Dongguan City, Guangdong Province
Dancing Qilin is a traditional Hakka Dance in Zhangmutou town.
Zhangmutou town is the only Hakka town in Dongguan City. Wuqilin was brought by Hakkas from the north in the late Ming and early Qing Dynasties. It has a history of more than 450 years.
The performance of dancing Qilin is performed by a young man dancing Qilin head and a young man dancing Qilin tail, accompanied by gongs, drums and suona. There are two parts in the head dance of Qilin: "head cover" ("linzhichengxiang") and "tail cover" ("caiqingfufu"). "Head cover" shows Qilin's actions, such as combing, licking feet, licking tail, licking body and washing face; "tail cover" shows Qilin's arduous process, such as searching, smelling, testing, looking for, teasing, picking, eating and spitting, which shows that Qilin brings happiness to the world and brings people a beautiful future Blessing. Then there was a martial arts performance.
Zhangmutou dancing Qilin is handed down orally and personally by its master. Each surname is its own. Most of them are handed down from generation to generation. Every autumn, young people of the same clan and surname in the village gather in the "boxing hall" of their ancestral temple to practice Kung Fu, and their master Qilin teaches them how to dance Qilin.
The Hakkas in Zhangmutou have the idea that "the dragon gives birth to nine sons, and the unicorn is the best", which endows the dancing Unicorn with unique cultural connotation.
