Tongren's block printing technique originated in the Yuan Dynasty. As early as the end of the 13th century, a Lama master named Sandan Renqin developed the Tibetan block printing technique. Tongren County in the southeast of Qinghai province still retains the traditional engraving and printing skills of Tongren. In the form of family traditional workshops, the manual skills of engraving and printing in Zhuolong village and guomari village of Nianduhu township have been handed down till now.
Tongren engraving and printing technology is mainly used for printing scriptures, books, painting patterns (Longda, harmony between man and beast, eight diagrams, various Buddha statues) and so on. The main themes are sacrificing mountain gods, sacrificing heaven, sacrificing land, farming, seasonal customs, in order to pray for good weather, grain harvest, wealth, good luck and other spiritual pursuits. It is the local farming social life and folk life As the epitome of Tibetan Buddhist culture, it is the carrier and transmitter of Tibetan traditional culture and exquisite handicrafts, which has important reference value for the study of Tibetan history, religion, culture, science and technology and the civilization process of Tibetan anthropology.
