Engraving printing technology appeared in Sui and Tang Dynasties, on the basis of which movable type printing was invented in Song Dynasty. However, engraving printing was not replaced by movable type printing, and it still occupied the mainstream position in ancient Chinese printing industry. At present, the engraving printing technology can be seen in Yangzhou Guangling ancient book engraving agency, where a group of engraving printing artists gathered, and there are nearly 300000 engraving plates, so its technology is called Yangzhou engraving printing technology.
The process of engraving printing is very complex, which can be divided into four parts, and each part has several procedures. One is material preparation, namely plate making, paper preparation and ink preparation; the other is engraving, namely plate writing, correction, plate mounting and carving; the third is brushing and color registration; the fourth is binding. Yangzhou Guangling ancient book Engraving Printing Co., Ltd. has the only complete set of ancient book engraving printing process in China, with a total of more than 20 processes. The whole process exudes a simple and elegant cultural atmosphere.
According to records, Yangzhou engraving printing technology was founded in the Tang Dynasty and developed unprecedentedly in the Qing Dynasty. During the reign of Kangxi, more than 3000 volumes of neifu books including the complete Tang poetry were printed. In 1960, Yangzhou Guangling ancient book engraving society was established, which became a functional organization to inherit engraving printing skills. However, as a self financing institution, this institution is now facing the situation of transforming into an enterprise. The market economy is approaching the traditional engraving printing process, and measures need to be taken to protect it.
