Introduction to Dong embroidery:

Applicant: Jinping County, Guizhou Province

Among the Dong's embroidery, the most representative variety is "Pan scroll hemmed embroidery", which is most famous for the embroidery works made by Dong women in PingQiu Town, Jinping County, Qiandongnan Miao and Dong Autonomous Prefecture, Guizhou Province and the surrounding areas.

Pingqiu town is located at the junction of the South and the north of the Dong cultural community in Guizhou Province. It is one of the birthplaces of the Dong culture in the north. Pingqiu, formerly known as "azhu", is a transliteration of Dong language; in the late Ming Dynasty, it was renamed "Pingqiu", meaning "things disappear naturally". The local Valley is vertical and horizontal, the forest is luxuriant, the folk custom is simple, has the unique custom and the custom.

According to the local inscriptions and legends, "Pan Zhou embroidery" was popular in the Ming and Qing Dynasties, and its basic embroidery method was composed of "Pan Zhou embroidery" and "rolling embroidery". "Pan axis embroidery" is to take a colored silk thread as the "lead", that is, "axis"; and then take two colored silk threads to wind them closely together, making it a thicker two in one prefabricated embroidery thread, also known as "Pan line". During embroidery, the "lead" is embroidered and straightened from the bottom of the pattern; the "coil thread" is used to make a circle at the root of the "lead" and tighten it; this process is repeated to embroider the outline of the pattern, which is "coil axis embroidery". "Rolling embroidery" is to take a white yarn as the "lead", and then take two white yarns to wind them closely together, and then wind the two in one white sand thread tightly on the "lead", so as to make it a thicker three in one embroidery thread. It is called "rolling embroidery" by embroidering (rolling) an edge around the pattern contour of "Pan axial embroidery". The general embroidery is composed of three "Pan axis embroidery" and one "rolling edge embroidery". In the middle of the outline of the pattern, the color line is used to fill the embroidery. The rest are usually embroidered by flat embroidery, cross stitch, random stitch and skipping stitch.

With a sense of relief, "pan and roll embroidery" is the representative work of Dong embroidery art, with distinct national characteristics. However, there are fewer and fewer Dong women who have mastered the skill of "Pan Zhou piping embroidery", so it is urgent to protect and inherit it.
