Applicant: Wenzhou City, Zhejiang Province
Ou embroidery is a traditional folk embroidery art popular in Wenzhou, Zhejiang Province. It has a long history and originated from folk women's embroidery workshop. Combined with the analysis of Ou embroidery, it is developed from the Tang Dynasty. At the end of Ming Dynasty and the beginning of Qing Dynasty, Wenzhou's external transportation was gradually developed, which enabled Ou embroidery to absorb the advantages of sister art and become mature in technology. At the end of Daoguang period in Qing Dynasty, Ou embroidery was very popular in Wenzhou. The folk custom of "11-12 niangs comb their hair, 13-23 niangs teach embroidery" and the custom of embroidering Luo skirt as a gift for young men and women. At that time, a number of embroidery shops were set up to undertake the embroidery of official clothes, brocade clothes, costumes and cheongsam, and the business was very prosperous. Ou embroidery is characterized by concise composition, gorgeous colors, rigorous needling, flexible manipulation, clear embroidery principle and bright embroidery surface. Ou embroidery, which integrates the beauty of poetry, calligraphy and painting, and embroidery, stresses the unity of needling, brushwork, and image, showing superb skill and profound traditional cultural connotation. Since the 1970s, due to various reasons, Ou embroidery has been on the decline and is on the verge of extinction, so it is urgent to rescue and protect it.
