Yangliuqing woodblock New Year pictures originated in Yangliuqing, a thousand year old town. In Yongle period of Ming Dynasty, the opening of Beijing Hangzhou Grand Canal and the rise of water transport in Tianjin made Yangliuqing an important distribution center of commodity trade between the north and the south, and the economy became increasingly prosperous. Artists of woodcut New Year pictures in surrounding areas have moved to Yangliuqing town to develop their business. Du Li wood, which is abundant outside Yangliuqing town, is very suitable for engraving. With this kind of available craft materials, Yangliuqing wood engraving New Year pictures rose and became more and more prosperous.
