Huju opera, formerly known as "Huzhou tanhuang", also has the titles of "Xiaoxi" and "Huagu". It is popular in Huzhou, Jiaxing and Hangzhou of Zhejiang Province, Wujiang and Yixing of Jiangsu Province, Guangde of Anhui Province, etc. Huju opera is based on Huzhou rap tanhuang and Huzhou Qinshu, which formed from Daoguang to Xianfeng in Qing Dynasty. It was named Hu opera in 1951.

Lake opera mainly plays tanhuang erhu, with fresh melody, elegant and delicate performance, singing "Xiaoxi tune", "bentan tune", "Shaoxiang tune" and so on, and forming a unique "18 semitones". Artists are called "Huzhou Gang", "Shuanglin Gang", "Nanxun Gang" and "Zhenze Gang" according to their regional dialects and singing differences. The performance of Hu opera is characterized by "Yin Yang voice", that is, male Dan uses the singing method of alternating true and false voice to perform. In the process of singing, the "Eighteen half syllables" are consistent with Wu dialect, and are sung in Huzhou dialect. The sound of Hu opera is kind and soft, with a strong flavor of Jiangnan. In the early stage, the roles of Xiaosheng, Xiaodan and clown increased to baxiaosheng and baxiaodan. The traditional repertoire of Huju opera, known as "96 dramas", is mostly about love and marriage. It is often performed in Yao Qilin, borrow yellow chaff, meet in an Tang, sell a younger sister to get married and so on. After the founding of the people's Republic of China, there are new historical drama "Great Wall song" and modern drama "Taihu Lake waves".

Huzhou Lake Opera Troupe is the professional group to perform Huzhou Lake opera. There are also some amateur troupes among the people, such as Wuxing tanhuang quyi troupe, Shuanglin troupe and Huju troupe, which are active in Deqing, Tongxiang and other places.
