Yunnan opera is one of the main local operas in Yunnan Province. It was formed in Daoguang period of Qing Dynasty and has a history of nearly 200 years. During the reign of Guangxu, Yunnan opera performances were very popular in Yuxi and other areas. Yunnan opera is popular in Yunnan Province and parts of Guizhou and Sichuan, and there are singing activities in Myanmar, Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia and other countries.
Yunnan opera has a unique voice and strong expression. Its three major tunes, Sixian tune, huqin tune and Xiangyang tune, originated from the ancient tunes of qin tune, huidiao tune and handiao tune, and were nourished by Yunnan folk music. Yunnan opera is rich and changeable, with natural and fluent tunes. It can perform plays of various themes, styles, structures and moods. It has unique artistic personality and style, so it has the reputation of "Yunnan quintessence".
According to records, there are 1651 kinds of traditional plays of Yunnan opera. When performing traditional plays, artists of all ages can combine the characteristics of the times and the local conditions of Yunnan to compose works reflecting the history and real life of the ethnic minorities in the border areas, which provides valuable materials for the study of local history and culture and southwest frontier art.
