Pingyang puppet show is a comprehensive form of puppet performance, with high ornamental and artistic research value. It has a long history in Pingyang County, Zhejiang Province. It was formed no later than Song Dynasty and reached its peak in Ming and Qing Dynasties. According to Jiang Zhun's Qihai trivial talks in the Ming Dynasty, Huang Zifu and other puppet artists in Pingyang at that time were "good at thinking about making puppets, exercising by chance, no different people In the Qing Dynasty, Zhang zuanwu's chuantun Yuchang, on the other hand, "children kiss the palace merchants, and learn Kunshan and Yiyang.". The poem "you don't have to be a banquet to watch Mr. Bao, but you have to be a good dancer" describes the performance of Pingyang puppet show. It can be seen from the verses that Kunshan and Yiyang tunes were performed in puppet shows at that time. During the period of the Republic of China, Pingyang puppet show was still very popular. At the beginning of the founding of new China, there were more than 100 classes in Pingyang County, including 42 classes with string, 75 classes with cloth bags, and 1 class with stick head, with more than 500 employees. Pingyang puppets have unique shapes. The puppet heads and costumes since Ming and Qing Dynasties are exquisitely made, well preserved and full of local color.

Pingyang puppet show has six tunes: Gao, Kun, Hui, Luan, Shi and tan. It also uses Mandarin, Ou language and Min language. There are various forms of performance, including string, stick head, cloth bag and puppet. In the long-term performance, Pingyang puppet opera has accumulated a wide range of plays. There are more than 300 traditional plays with themes related to all aspects of society. Many plays, such as "water over the Golden Mountain" and "the clock flies around", have won awards for many times, and have been performed in Beijing for four times and abroad for four times. They are well-known both at home and abroad.
