Brief introduction of puppet show

Yangzhou is one of the birthplaces of Chinese puppet show. In Song Dynasty, Yangzhou puppet show is well-known. There are performances of Yangzhou puppet show all over the country, temples, roadsides and Palace houses. After entering the Qing Dynasty, Yangzhou puppet opera absorbed the advantages of Kun Opera, Hui opera and Jing opera. After several generations of artists' innovation and creation, Yangzhou puppet opera finally formed the unique style of stick head puppet manipulation performance.

The performance of the stick head puppet requires the actors to practice the three basic skills of lifting the puppet, the cutting skill of manipulating the puppet and the stage step skill of embodying the character's step characteristics. They should grasp the four elements of "stability, integrity, straightness and flatness" and be proficient in the movements and use them freely in the performance. The stick head puppet is well received by the audience because of its exquisite and vivid performance.

The traditional performing repertoire of zhangtou puppet show is mostly transplanted from Kun, Hui, Jing and other operas. The modern new repertoire has a new pursuit in the subject matter, content and form of expression, and the music configuration often depends on the repertoire and form of expression.
