Brief introduction of shadow play (Wangkui County shadow play)

Wangkui of Heilongjiang Province has been under the jurisdiction of hailun Prefecture since the Qing Dynasty. There are a large number of immigrants from central China, especially from Hebei Province. Therefore, the use of Jidong dialect is very extensive in the local area. At the end of the 18th century, shadow puppet artists from leting, Hebei Province came to Wangkui to sing. Since then, shadow puppet has been developing in the local area. In the 1950s, Wangkui shadow play was once popular, playing the banner of "Jiangbei school" of Heilongjiang shadow play. By the 1970s, it had become the main art performance style in Wangkui town and countryside.

Wangkui shadow play retains the characteristics of Jidong folk ditty. On this basis, it absorbs a large number of external tunes and zapaiziqupai of Shuangcheng shadow play, and forms its own style. Therefore, it is called "liangheshui" shadow play. The traditional shadow plays of Wangkui mainly focus on Gongan, swordsman, battle, court, folk customs and legends. The frequently performed plays include "five summit", "double lost marriage", "biography of Yue Fei" and "Baogong case".

Wangkui shadow play has a unique artistic value. While developing itself, it also has a significant impact on other sister arts in the region. Heilongjiang's folk paper-cut, stone and wood carving, Beijing opera, Pingju, Longjiang opera, folk dance, Errenzhuan and other stage arts all draw on Wangkui shadow play's production technology, music, singing and performance.
