Hejian shadow play is one of the important representatives of shadow play in central Hebei Province, which is popular in Hejian City, Hebei Province. Jizhong shadow play was introduced by Western immigrants in the early period. At that time, it was called "Lanzhou shadow play", and mainly spread in Baoding, Cangzhou, Langfang and Shijiazhuang of Hebei Province. At present, shadow play in central Hebei has basically disappeared in Baoding, Langfang and other places, and is still relatively intact in Hejian.

Hejian shadow play embodies the characteristics of Western shadow play in terms of modeling, while its script, singing, performance and many other aspects are the same as those of Western shadow play in Beijing. Hejian shadow play's singing is known as "tiger tune", including "Dabei tune", "Xiaobei tune" and "Ping'an tune". Its style is rough and unrestrained, mellow and simple, and its singing is closely combined with the local dialect. The accompaniment band can be divided into civil and military fields, where Banhu, erhu, Sheng, flute and other musical instruments are used, while bangu, Yinyang board, Gong, cymbal and other musical instruments are used. In the long-term performance practice, Hejian shadow play has formed a number of rich oral plays, such as taking spiders, Hunyuan box, five rats in Tokyo, etc.

At present, due to the death of the old artists, a large number of valuable pieces of Hejian shadow play are gradually disappearing. The prospect is worrying, and it is urgent to strengthen the rescue and protection.
