Mabei Tibetan opera was founded in longen temple, Gande County, Golog Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Qinghai Province. It mainly spread in Golog Prefecture. From the early 1990s, it gradually spread in Gannan, Ganzi, ABA, Yushu and other surrounding Tibetan areas.

Horseback Tibetan Opera is a unique drama based on Tibetan opera. It takes grassland as the background and horseback as the stage. It always reproduces heroic stories on horseback. This form of drama originated from the horse racing clubs of various tribes in Golog in the middle of the 17th century. In order to better meet the audience's appreciation requirements and show the plot more perfectly, equestrian skills were properly added to the performance at that time, so the horse back Tibetan Opera developed and flourished in Golog. It integrates Tibetan Classical Literature, music, dance, art and equestrian performance, and reproduces the historical scenes and plots depicted in the play through rap, dance and realistic equestrian performance. Up to now, there are six horseback Tibetan opera troupes in Guoluo Prefecture.

Mabei Tibetan Opera preserves the folk religious culture, folk performing arts, folk handicrafts and folk sports in Guoluo area. It is a living historical material reflecting the nomadic life of the Tibetan people in Guoluo area. It has irreplaceable important value in the study of sociology, folklore, Tibetan history and culture and religious culture.
