The ancient city is an ancient market town. It is said that as early as the spring and Autumn period of the Eastern Zhou Dynasty (770-476 BC) and the Warring States period (475-221 BC), this place was a city. During the northern and Southern Dynasties, there was once a county.

According to historical records, the ancient city in the Han Dynasty, a radius of more than four miles, surrounded by walls, the site is also famous. After the founding of the people's Republic of China, the administrative divisions changed several times. In 1990, in order to develop Feihe, the county Party committee decided to merge Gucheng, caosi and zhangbaying into one district. In 1992, the district was withdrawn and became Gucheng township.

The main rivers in the territory are Xiehe, Qinggou River and huaihongxin River, which flow into the territory of Wuhe County to Hongze Lake.

Feihe River (Sifang Lake) is located in the middle of Gucheng township. It originates from Kaifeng County, Henan Province. After entering Bozhou, Woyang and Mengcheng County, it enters huaihongxin river through Chuji, Shuangqiao, Xinji, Sifang lake and Xiehe, and finally joins huaihongxin River and Hongze Lake within the five rivers.
