Zaoyuan township is located in the southwest of the county, 13 kilometers away from the county across the Heihe River. It is connected with Zhaoren town and Randian Township in the East, Jujia town in the south, Diaojie Township in Lingtai County in Gansu Province in the West and Dingjia town in the north. The terrain belongs to Liangmao gully area. The central tableland is long and narrow. It is adjacent to Nanhe River and Heihe River on both sides and reaches the intersection of hechuankou village. Changling highway (from Changwu county to Lingtai County, Gansu Province) runs through the area. The rural roads are smooth and the traffic is convenient, covering an area of 58.6 square kilometers. The township government is located in Zaoyuan village.

the main crops are wheat, corn and sorghum. The leading industry is flue-cured tobacco, covering an area of about 5000 mu. At the same time, Zaoyuan township is a typical production base of marigold. There are Xihe site, Zhangjiagou site, Guocun tomb site of Tang Dynasty and other cultural relics.

Zaoyuan commune was established in 1961 and the township was changed in 1984. In 1996, it covered an area of 52 square kilometers and had a population of 8000. In 2011, the township was set up.

In 2004, it has jurisdiction over 18 administrative villages including Zaoyuan, Tianjia, Huijia, Lijiawa, Guocun, Wujia, Niuwang, Xihe, Da'an, shengdeng, Beipo, Zhaizi, jiaojiawa, Chenjia, hechuankou, Zhangjiagou, anjiahe and huagesi.
