It was originally named longshanpu because there is a stone beam about 2km away from the village, which looks like a dragon. The surrounding mountains are called Longshan. In the Ming Dynasty, it was named longshanpu because it was built along the post road to deliver official documents. Later, it was named Banqiao because there was a wooden bridge on the river in the northwest of the village. In the Republic of China, it was Zhengnan district and the seventh district. In the year of the Republic of China, it was divided into Banqiao Town, Hongqiao Town and Gele township. In 1949, it was the New Fourth District. In 1950, it was Banqiao (IV) district. In 1950, it was Banqiao (VII) district. In 1953, it was merged with Chengxi district to form Banqiao District, governing 25 townships (towns). After 1953, the territory has shrunk several times. Xianfeng commune (Banqiao commune in 1958), Banqiao commune, Hongqiao commune and Gele commune in 1961, Banqiao commune in January 1963 and Banqiao commune in 1970; Banqiao commune and Luoshui commune in 1973, and Banqiao commune has 15 brigades. Banqiao District in 1984 and Banqiao Town in 1988. In 1997, it covers an area of 279 square kilometers and has a population of 71000. It governs 15 administrative villages including Banqiao, xibian, Zhuangzi, Hongqiao, Longjin, dongtun, Tucheng, MUNAI, Gele, Mafang, Xiacun, Yatang, gengtun, Yong'an and Shigang. In 2002, Hongqiao and Mafang villages in Banqiao Town were assigned to Hongqiao street. In 2014, the town will be changed into a street!
On January 1, 2014, Banqiao street of Xuanwei City held the unveiling ceremony of the establishment of the street.
