Dingqing County in Changdu Prefecture governs the town. Located in the northwest of the county, 68 kilometers away from Dingqing town. Chidu town was originally Chidu township. In 1999, it was withdrawn and merged into the town, becoming the largest town in Dingqing county. The total area is 1312 square kilometers, with an average altitude of 3700 meters.

It has jurisdiction over 11 village committees and 71 natural villages. The town government is located in waguo village. Population 8407, mainly Tibetan. The economy is dominated by agriculture, with the combination of agriculture and animal husbandry. The area of cultivated land is 1120.5 hectares, the annual grain output is 3250 tons, and the per capita net income of farmers and herdsmen is 1786.22 yuan in 2003. Chidu town has convenient transportation, 317 national highway passes through the town, and 10 administrative villages are connected with highways. In 2003, a cable TV network was set up in the territory, including a central school, a complete primary school and four teaching sites, with 1179 students. There are three clinics in the town.
