On March 31, 1994, it was approved as a provincial nature reserve by Yunnan Provincial People's government. In January 2003, it was promoted to a national nature reserve by the State Council. In January 2005, it was approved by the International Convention on wetlands and listed in the list of important international wetlands. It is one of the 30 important international wetlands in China. The main protected objects of Dashanbao black necked Crane National Nature Reserve are black necked Crane and its overwintering habitat subalpine meadow wetland. There are 3150 hectares of wetlands in the reserve.
